Association of Emergence Time of First Deciduous Tooth with Anthropometric Measurements among Infants of Kolar District, Karnataka.

Title: Association of Emergence Time of First Deciduous Tooth with Anthropometric Measurements among Infants of Kolar District, Karnataka.
Authors: Deepa C, Sudha Reddy, Shilpa C, Sushma R, Manjunath M.
Abstract: Introduction: Tooth eruption is an important milestone of human growth and development. In the past few years, a delayed emergence of the
deciduous tooth is observed. Anthropometric measurements are an important tool used to assess infants’ growth and development.
Objective: To study the association of emergence time of first deciduous tooth with height, weight (Wt), and head circumference (HC) among
infants of Kolar District.
Materials and methods: An observational study comprising 154 infants between the age group of 5 and 12 months was considered. Infants
with the presence of at least one emerging first deciduous tooth brought to the Hospital of Kolar district for routine vaccinations were examined.
Data were collected for a period of 6 months. Infants were subjected to anthropometric measurements that comprised of HC, Wt, and length
(Lt) recorded along with birth weight (BW) for further analysis. Statistical analysis was carried out using descriptive and inferential statistics
using SPSS version 21. The student’s t-test was used for assessment of statistical significance.
Results: Of the 154 infants examined, tooth emergence (TE) age of lower central incisor (LCI) in females was 8.26 ± 1.81 months and males
were 8.74 ± 1.20 months which was not very statistically significant, however, for upper central incisor (UCI) males showed an earlier age of TE.
Infant’s BW, HC, Wt, and Lt did not prove to be statistically significant for TE of LCI. Alternatively for UCI, HC and Wt were found to be inversely
proportional to the age of TE.
Conclusion: In general, the assessment of TE with anthropometric measurements carried out did not show any significant association with an
infant’s growth and development. However, there is scope for further studies with a larger sample size that can include additional parameters
of assessing nutritional status.

Title: Clinical Approach to Decision-Making in Nasogastric Tube Weaning and Tracheostomy Tube Decannulation.
Authors: Deepika Kenkere Abhilasha K.
Abstract: Abstract Extensive resections for advanced malignancies
of the oral cavity quite often require patients to have a
tracheostomy tube and nasogastric tube for prolonged
periods leading to dependence. Timely and safe removal of
these tubes would help hasten the recovery and rehabilitation
of these patients. A simple bedside protocol for
evaluation and weaning of nasogastric tube and tracheostomy
tube is outlined in this communication. This
would help health care workers in resource-poor settings
make safe clinical decisions and improve care.

Forehead flap: a reconstructive option in selected complex defects following resection of oral cancers staged T4.

Authors: Deepika Kenkere, S.M.Azeem Mohiyuddin, Ravindra P Deo, Sagayaraj A, Kouser Mohammadi, Prashanth Babu, Shuaib Merchant, Sumanth K.R, Gopinanth K.S
Abstract: Background: Head and neck squamous carcinoma constitutes 30% of malignancies in our region, oral carcinoma being most common among them. Most of these tumours involve lower gingivobuccal sulcus and buccal mucosa. 80% patients present with locally advanced disease. Following resection of these tumours, reconstruction of composite defects is challenging. Though microvascular free flaps are ideal in such cases, it is not always feasible due to malnutrition, peripheral vascular disease, sometimes non–availability of microvascular surgeon and financial constraints. Pectoralis major myocutaneous flap, the workhorse of reconstruction is bulky, non-pliable and cannot be advanced over intact mandible. Forehead flap in complex defects is pliable, versatile, has excellent vascularity and colour matching, easy to harvest and suitable in selected cases and as salvage flap when other flaps fail. The aim of the study was to document outcome of folded forehead flap reconstruction of complex defects following resection of T4 staged oral carcinoma.
Methods: This retrospective study in a tertiary rural hospital included 31 patients with oral carcinoma staged T4. The patients underwent folded forehead flap reconstruction for full thickness cheek defects with some extending into oral commissure and lower lip, along with segmental or alveolar resection of mandible or maxilla.
Results: 27 patients had uneventful healing, 2 had wound dehiscence and 2 had necrosis of distal part of flap. Patients with externally rotated flap had mild trismus and patients in whom forehead flap was used to reconstruct the oral commissure had oral incompetence.
Conclusions: Folded forehead flap is good reconstructive option in complex full thickness defects of cheek and as salvage reconstruction.
