Title: Concept of Electroconvulsive Therapy in India: A Narrative Review
Authors: Rajkumar, M G1; Srinivasa2, Reddy P; Harish, R3
Abstract: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is one of the pivotal treatment modalities
used in modern psychiatry. This treatment modality involves applying electrical
stimulus with the help of an electrical device to induce a seizure. The induced
seizure is used as the vital element for curative effect. This paper reviews
the ECT research published in various journals, majority of these articles have
focused on establishing the efficacy in different disorders. Significant numbers
of papers describe the ECT procedure, ECT machine, adverse effects of ECT
and amendments in mental health laws. Majority of papers from India focus
on legal aspects of ECT and long term follow-up of ECT-treated patients.
Despite the strict legislations made, ECT is considered as one of the most
beneficial treatment procedure for depression during the COVID-19 pandemic.
ECT continues to be a debatable treatment modality in modern psychiatry in
context of its ethical caveats.

Awareness of medico legal issues among interns and resident doctors at a tertiary care hospital in kolar, Karnataka, India: A cross sectional study

Title: Awareness of medico legal issues among interns and resident doctors at a tertiary care hospital in kolar, Karnataka, India: A cross sectional study
Authors: Srinivasa Reddy, P; Abhinandana, R
Abstract: Introduction: Medicolegal issues are handled by every doctor
in their day-to-day medical practice. However, if they are not
well versed in the rules of managing such cases and the law
behind them, they often land into criticism and distress in court
while dealing with evidence in Medicolegal Cases (MLCs).
Aim: To assess the awareness of interns and resident doctors,
who are working at RL Jalappa Hospital and Research Centre,
regarding the management of MLCs in their day-to-day practices.
Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based
study was conducted to determine the awareness of medicolegal
issues among 107 participants, including interns and resident
doctors in the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology
at a tertiary care hospital, Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College,
Tamaka Kolar, Karnataka, India, from January 2022 to October
2022. A prevalidated list of 21 questionnaires, obtained through
a pilot study with Cronbach’s alpha=0.78, was used. Numerical
data were summarised using mean and standard deviation, while
categorical data were expressed using percentages.
Results: The mean age of the study participants was 28.6
years. Most of the participants were from Surgery and allied
fields (61%), and the majority of the participants (51.4%) had
one to two years of experience in the medical field. Among
the findings, it was observed that 67.28% of participants had
insufficient knowledge about the minimum age requirement
for informed consent, 60% of residents had insufficient
knowledge of maintaining meticulous medical records, 57%
of the participants responded incorrectly regarding the desired
way of handling brought dead cases in hospitals, and 63.8% of
the participants had poor knowledge of the Karnataka Private
Medical Establishment (KPME) act and organ transplantation act.
Conclusion: The study concluded that while interns and
postgraduates showed some level of awareness regarding
certain aspects of medicolegal issues, like need for consent,
they still lack comprehensive knowledge on subjects like legal
requirements of consent, medical records, the KPME act, and
organ transplantation act. Therefore, it is necessary to modify
the curriculum for students and provide orientation programs,
continued medical education, and guest lectures to interns
and residents to build fiduciary character in Indian medical
graduates.

An autopsy based retrospective study on pattern of thoraco-abdominal injuries in fetal road traffic accidents of kolar, south india

Title: An autopsy based retrospective study on pattern of thoraco-abdominal injuries in fetal road traffic accidents of kolar, south india
Authors: Rajkumar, M G; Srinivasa Reddy, P; Ajay Kumar, T S; Abhinandana, R
Abstract: Background: India is experiencing increasing road traffic accidents (RTA) amidst increasing motorization and
infrastructure growth in recent years. Every day, nearly 400 road deaths occur on Indian roads and several
thousands are hospitalized due to road crashes. WHO estimates the incidence of road deaths to be 16.6 per 100000
population in India1. With the aim of studying pattern and exploring various epidemiological characteristics of
RTAs, this retrospective study of medico-legal autopsies was conducted.
Aims & Objectives: 1 To study the pattern of thoraco-abdominal injuries (TAI) in fatal road traffic accidents in
Kolar. 2. To describe demographic profile and create public awareness on road safety.
Material & Methods: A retrospective autopsy based study of pattern of thoraco-abdominal injuries in victims of
fatal road traffic accidents was conducted in Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, Kolar (South India) from 1st January
2014 to 31st December 2014. A total of 192 RTA victims were referred for autopsy during the period of which
100 cases sustaining thoraco-abdominal injuries were studied.
Results: A total of 192 medicolegal autopsies were conducted on victims of road traffic accidents (RTA) during the
study period. Among them, 100 victims suffered thoraco-abdominal injuries, which accounted for 52.08% of the
cases. The highest number of victims belonged to the age group of 20-40 years, accounting for 48% of the cases.
In terms of gender distribution, males constituted 62.0% of the victims while females constituted 38.0%. The most
common injuries were to the liver, accounting for 37.75% of the total injuries. Other frequently affected body parts
included the spleen, lungs, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, and spine.
Conclusion: The analyzed data provides clear evidence that road accidents are foreseeable and avoidable. To
make substantial improvements in road safety throughout India, it is essential to establish a robust and effective
national and state-level road safety authority, foster intersectoral coordination, and secure regular funding. Our
aim in sharing this article is to increase public awareness of the significance of road traffic injuries from a public
health perspective and to alleviate the weight of fatalities and injuries on our communities.

A multifaceted Investigation Saga of an Sordid Act of Mariticide - A Case Report

Title: A multifaceted Investigation Saga of an Sordid Act of Mariticide - A Case Report
Authors: Abhinandana, R.; Rajkumar, M G
Abstract: Mariticide means literally killing one’s own husband. Criminals use various
methods and means to escape from a crime. Smothering is caused by
obstruction of respiration through nose and mouth and establishing the
homicidal manner of smothering is a difficult task. Neck is considered as a vital
structure in the human body by being a relay station for vital structures passing
through, any injury to neck is life threatening. When an assailant fabricates a
wound following death he/she is hoping to deceive the investigating officers
in the manner of death. Analysing the antemortem and postmortem nature
of wounds may help in solving this. Here we discuss a case of mariticide by
smothering disguised as cut injury to the neck and the investigation saga of
this by using multifactorial approaches and methods.
